The majority of Western literature on communist parties until the 1970s was largely speculative in nature. The primary reason for this was the lack of "authentic" sources, meaning reliable written sources. The emergence of the so-called oral history movement in the 1960s opened up new avenues for the study of communist history.

The title can be further elaborated upon in this way: a search for models/methods that will help us understand how the CPSU tried to influence the development of the national politics of each Nordic Communist Party. Here I choose to view the Communist politics of the Nordic countries from a Soviet angle and will try to find out how the CPSU developed and deployed certain parameters to decide whether a Communist Party was a "real Communist Party" or not.
